        Check out the purchasing section. It basically says the same thing. The only thing missing is the ability to auto generate the PO and put the line items and quantities and then each day adjust them until the PO is submitted. A single item can have multiple vendors associated with it.

        I can submit an excel sheet to you to give you a feel for a very simple way that we manage our inventory. I suspect that most people are going to be using some form of this. It is based on sales forecast (for us - historical 90 day moving average). This is the only real variable which each company will have to specify (daily, monthly, quarterly, # of days). The rest is based on forecast (demand) * production time (determines on hand quantities required to meet projected demand) - what is on hand currently - what is already ordered + back ordered quantities + quantity allocated on a sales order. This will tell you HOW MUCH to put on a PO for this item at any given time based on how real time your transactions are.
